My grandchildren cut their teeth (sometimes literally) on her books for younger children and the Worst Witch series, first published in 1974, is a timeless classic. When she gets to school it all starts to go wrong, as Ethel steals her project and there are problems with a tortoise who doesn't like being called Speedy and a ride in a broomstick in near-hurricane conditions. She's even pleasantly surprised when her arch enemy, Ethel Hallow, drops in (from her broomstick) as Mildred rescues her cat from a tree. She's worked on the most wonderful project over the holidays and she's certain that everyone is going to be impressed. Mildred Hubble isn't usually quite so keen to go back to Miss Cackle's Academy for Witches on the first day of term, but today it's different. It's a school-based adventure story with illustrations by the author. Summary: The fifth book in The Worst Witch series will delight any early reader although it's probably more for girls than boys. ![]() Torenhoog En Mijlen Breed by Tonke Dragt5/11/2023 ![]() ![]() – I started reading “The Animals of Farthing Wood”-series. I did like the story, but it was so slow, and some of the characters… argh! I now succeeded through pure perserverance, and the knowing that my partner loved this book (since he could relate to the main character, being an painting artist who couldn’t always do what he would love to be doing). I attempted to read the book that followed multiple times, but just couldn’t get through. I must’ve read that book at least 5 times. This book follows onto “Torenhoog en Mijlen Breed” (Towering High and Miles Wide not translated as well) that I devoured as a kid and young adult. – I finally, finally, FINALLY finished “Ogen van Tijgers” (Eyes of Tigers this book has not been translated into English though) by Tonke Dragt. However, there were some book-related high points: This past week consisted of way more Buffy the Vampire Slayer (just finished season 2, and started season 3) than reading. ![]() Naomi novik silver5/11/2023 ![]() ![]() Miryem is the Jewish daughter of a soft-hearted moneylender who would rather live in poverty than collect his debts Wanda is the gentile daughter of an abusive alcoholic farmer and Irina is the part-Staryk daughter of a disappointed duke scheming for the throne. In Lithvas - a country ruled by a Tsar and his dukes, and harried by gold-hungry fairy creatures called the Staryk - three young women struggle to make the most of their lives. (Full disclosure: I, too, had a story in The Starlit Wood.) It's a sophisticated development of her short story by the same title published in the 2016 anthology The Starlit Wood: New Fairy Tales - itself a brilliant reclamation of "Rumpelstiltskin," digging deep into that story's anti-Semitism and pulling up something nourishing from the roots. Naomi Novik's Spinning Silver is not a sequel to her 2015 novel Uprooted, though both are richly remade fairy tales set in fantastical versions of Eastern Europe with addictive voice work and characterization. Kid hooks up with a young woman, but theirs is a model of casual relationships: They screw, they eat together, they hang out, and they go their own way for long stretches without checking in (which is impossible in this place - electricity service is spotty, and of course, no social media). There are violent scenes - Kid ends up running with a gang, the members using holographic projectors to create their individual gang identities - and then more sex. In the first sections of the book, the hero - who never remembers his name, but is generally called Kid - has sex with a woman and then later with a man later things get wilder, and frankly perverse. ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() In “Let Me See You Smile”, one character is described as possessing “a compassionate curiosity about everyone”, and the same was clearly true of Berlin herself. ![]() In “Tiger Bites”, a story detailing the horrors of a backstreet abortion clinic in Mexico, it is the warmth and wicked fun of the relationship between the narrator and her glamorous cousin that remain to the fore.īerlin had many jobs during her life and she is an acute chronicler of institutions and the often overlooked world of work – in particular the low-prestige, low-paid work of nurses, cleaners, administrators and supply teachers. In “So Long”, a marriage to a heroin addict is described as encompassing both “times of intense Technicolor happiness and times that were sordid and frightening”, and that goes some way to capturing the emotional range of the collection.
